What does work mean?
Work can mean many different things to many different people. For some people, work is a place of joy and a symbol of personal growth and achievement. For others, work is something that just needs to be done to earn a living. Despite the numerous perspectives on the personal meaning of work however, one common aspect for a lot of people is work stress. No matter what field people work in, whether it is engineering, retail or counselling, workplace stress is something that everyone experiences at some point in their professional lives. Keep in mind that the intensity and persistence of that stress can vary from person to person.
One of the things that can cause a lot of stress is when the balance between people’s work and personal lives is disrupted. Sometimes people’s work lives can be very busy, imposing many demands and in their desire to respond to the numerous demands, many people start prioritizing their work over their personal lives.
To restore that balance between work and your personal life take a look at the following suggestions:
Try your best to avoid bringing work home.
Although it may be difficult to leave your work at work especially when there are many things that need to get done, bringing work home can prevent you from taking a needed break and being able to relax. One thing that can help is getting in the habit of doing something right after work to signify that the work day has ended. This can be something very simple such as walking home or stopping on your way home and buying a snack. That way you can go home and do things that you enjoy and that are not work-related such as doing some exercise, maybe seeing some friends or spending time with your family or doing any activities that you may find calming. This way you will be able to re-energize for your next day at work.
Ensure that your needs are taken care of even at work.
Despite how busy work can be, it is important to also ensure that your needs are being met. We all need energy to be effective at our jobs and a lot of that energy comes from food. So take advantage of your lunch break and enjoy a meal and also bring some snacks if possible. If you happen to find yourself feeling overwhelmed or stressed out at some point during the work day, use a few minutes to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to calm yourself.
Work on setting some personal boundaries.
At work we may find ourselves building relationships with our colleagues and that’s great. But sometimes these relationships can transfer over to our personal lives and we may be in situations in which our colleagues ask us for help outside of work or inviting us to various events. It is important to remember that you have a choice in these situations. If you think that you would enjoy spending more time with your colleagues outside of work that’s fine. But it’s also okay to say no, if you would rather do something else and not spend that time with people from work. Remember that there needs to be a balance between work and personal life and a part of restoring that balance is separating those two aspects, even if that involves saying no to colleagues.
